Description

Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin due to an overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin color, produced by melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis. The enzyme Tyrosinase determines the amount of melanin produced. Triggers such as UV rays, hormones, medications, and inflammation can stimulate melanocytes to overproduce pigment.
